I would like to share my experience of IELTS at New Delhi by british council.
To start with we got a listening test with cordless headphones, we were all told to test the headphones and properly hear the demo music going on.
The listening part was easy for me, as compared to samples in Insight into Ielts. I could get all the conversation > how many answers I dont know
Then the reading part
This was sort of tricky , it consisted to 3 part as usual. But as compared to normal one series of questions where we have to match the para headings we gor 2 of these. So out of 40 total , 12 questions were only match the paras in the texts with the headings, I comparatively hate such tasks. Thugh I believe that I did them well. And yes I called this part tricky as the first excercise was most difficult and time consuming as compared to rest 2.
Then the writing part
we had two parts
1st was > write a 150 words on a diagram which showed a river flow
The river flow was marked as fast at the start and slow at the end , A delta was visible at the end marked as sea.
Attached to this diagram were two sub illustrations which showed that pollutants were in flow in faster moving river and settle down in slow moving end of river. Also farming pollutants were shown to be used as food by river bed plants
2nd > write 250 words on
Some schools give admission solely on basis of academic ability, while others believe that this should not be a criteria.
I have messed up with the essay title some what but its meaning remained the same.
Now writing was comparatively bad then other modules on the first day. The next day we were called for speaking
Speaking > This is where I am really worried : the examiner was from some western country,
I made these mistakes
1) Spoke slowly, She asked me to speak loudly. Also with this she put the tape recorder more near to me. I wish she dosent apply a penalty for that
2) I paused for a second or 2 at the max in my long turn
3) When the last series was going on I had to ask her to repeat a question
Rest all questions I, in my opinion answered well and with long good justifiable answers. I could apeak fluently, backup my thoughts and maintain some eye contact.
There were questions like
1) Describe a happy person, why is he / she happy
2) How do you relax
3) Do people relax often these days.
Hope you all pray for me and I pass.
congrats xxxxxxx , you got a good score!!

Howdy, dudes and dudettes! Well, I've come here to share my experience on my band 8.0 IELTS score!
The name's Henry. I'm 24 years old and I'm currently an English Professor at the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil in Ecuador (South America).
First of all, I had no idea such exam existed until I found out about it doing some research on admission requirements for English-speaking universities. This was some 2 months ago and I think I heard it from someone that the IELTS examination couldn't be set in Ecuador but in Colombia. Good thing I did lots of research and I found an examination center in my city!
In the placement test, I got a listening from the Cambridge IELTS 5 book (I would later discover this when I downloaded the book from this very site), some stupid writing (General) about a letter to a bank and a very challenging Reading part. Turns out some days later I found out they told me I got a band between 5 and 6 in overall! I was shocked!
I started looking for a lot of sites that would give me the right material to start practicing and I found this one. I downloaded the Cambridge IELTS 5 book with the listenings and did the whole 4 practice tests in about 1 or 2 weeks. I was very dedicated and I don't remember any other time when I did such thorough studying, let alone English.
I was a bit nervous the days before taking the exam. Then, on the examination date (October 8th, 2009), I tried to feel more relaxed. I said to myself that I had practiced long and hard, so I did feel more relieved.
The listenings were about a guy booking some place at an IT fair, the second one I don't remember and the third one was about the Australian Quarantine Service, where a woman explained things that can be brought into Australia, passing through Customs at the airport. There was a fourth one of course and I think it was about some rare animal I don't remember. It was a kind of shell or somethin.
I found the readings appealing and they indeed had some degree of difficulty, although I did my best and understood most of them. I just remember two of them: the Xhosa people in South Africa and the other one was about how babies can learn things using symbology.
The writing was quite simple, IMHO: the first task was to interpret a graph that showed preferences of boys and girls in Australia regarding to sports. I think I made a little mistake when I wrote "The fact that women prefer aerobics rather than football might be explained since they like more stylish and delicate disciplines", so I guess that part lowered my grade a bit because it was most likely slightly biased. The second writing task was writing an essay about "Do you agree that certain languages die out every year?" So I wrote quite a bit about that...I enjoyed it, actually.
Then the Speaking came. They took longer than the others to call me and I was a little angry, but I just said to them: "I would appreciate that you told me when it'll be my turn" and they replied: "Don't worry, it'll be very soon". I can say I wasn't nervous. As I suspected, they asked me a few things about myself (my bedroom, what do I do in it, to describe my family and my house) then they started on the topic of advertising in my country. The female examiner asked me my views on it (I said 'there's an excess...bla bla bla...) and that was it. I spoke at a good pace, making very very little mistakes, my pronunciation was swift, but I thought I had done badly. However...
...in total, I got:
Speaking: 8.5
Listening: 7.5
Writing: 8.0
Reading: 8.0
Overall: 8.0
Hope this experience helps you guys somehow! ![]()

Hello friends!
I scored the following bands on the test and wonder if you think they are good enough:
Listening 8.5
Reading 9
Writing 7.5
Speaking 7.5
Overall 8
If you have some information or know a web site about IELTS and CEFR comparison, please share.
Thank you in advance!
Hey Desertrose,
I liked your performance in the Speaking Module. There is always this doubt about the 'pause' and 'duration of pause' allowed in the IELTS test.
I believe that a 2-5 sec pause for the Interviewer is nothing; though for the candidate it lasts a century. What I want to say is that small pauses in between are permissible.
I also came across some interesting phrases for the Speaking section while browsing these free tests on wiziq.com.
Pick up any IELTS Online Practice Test on this website and check your performance.
