An English grammar is a body of rules specifying exactly what sequences of marks or sounds are correct in the English language. Many accurate grammars exist, each describing a dialect or some portion of a dialect; some such grammars are essentially natural, having formed over time due to random linguistic shift, while others have been subjected to some form of conscious manipulation. The former grammars are often referred to as descriptivist, the latter as prescriptivist, because they have respectively arisen by either description of existing dialects or prescription of changes to preexisting dialects.
No human language grammar has been fully mapped out. That is, no set of unambiguous rules has been formulated that will always or almost always agree with native speakers on whether any given sentence is grammatical or not. (This is evidenced by the generally poor performance of automated grammar checkers and so on.) The development of a complete grammar is an important goal of natural language processing.
